Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a test to detect changes or abnormalities in the colon and rectum. During this procedure, a tube will be inserted into the rectum. In the tube, there will be a video camera at the top of the tube and allow the doctor to view/evaluate the inside of the entire colon.

Whenever necessary, polyps and other types of abnormal tissue can be removed during the procedure. Moreover, a biopsy can be taken during a colonoscopy. Dr.Maher will notify of any findings after the procedure is completed. Usually, a colonoscopy will take around 30 minutes.

Hemorrhoid Banding

There are two kinds of hemorrhoids, and they are internal and external. Both kinds are painful. External hemorrhoids are usually more painful than internal. Moreover, both type of hemorrhoids are treatable with pain-free hemorrhoid banding treatment. As with most diseases, poor diets and lack of exercise can be big contributors to hemorrhoids.

There are several factors that play a part in the promotion and prevalence of hemorrhoids. These include factors such as:

  • Constipation
  • Low fat diet
  • Pregnancy
  • Inactive lifestyle
  • Heavy lifting

GERD

Gastroesophagel reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows into the tube connecting from the mouth to the stomach (esophagus). This backwash (acid reflux) can irritate the lining of your esophagus.

Acid reflux can be experienced from time to time. GERD is mild acid reflux that occurs at least twice a week or moderate. Moderate to severe acid reflux occurs at least once a week. Most people can manage the discomfort of GERD with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. However, there are some people with GERD that may need stronger medications or surgery to ease symptoms.

GERD can be traced back to frequent acid reflux. When you swallow, a circular band of muscle around the bottom of your lower esophageal sphincter eases up to allow food and liquid to flow into your stomach. The sphincter then closes again.

If the sphincter relaxes or weakens in an abnormal way, the stomach fluid can blow back up into your esophagus. The constant backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus, often causing it to become inflamed.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. The inflammation that this condition causes will often spread deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue and different areas of the digestive tract. As a result, this disease can be both painful and debilitating. In some cases, Crohn’s disease can lead to life-threatening complications.

Signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease range from mild to severe. In fact, they usually develop gradually, while other times they will appear suddenly, without warning.
