What is a gastroenterologist?
Most people don’t actually know what a gastrologist does. Fair enough, it’s a weird, complicated name so we don’t blame you!
Gastrologists treat stomach and intestinal issues, but they also examine any organs related to those that might be affecting normal bodily function. If you’re having any digestive or stomach health issues, it is probably best you call to schedule an appointment.
We do treat IBS symptoms and provide treatment, that is actually one of the most common reasons our patients show up. But gastrologists treat numerous other issues and complications such as GERD, hemorrhoids, Crohn’s disease, ulcers, and numerous other diseases and issues.
Our clinic also actively participates in research studies. During your appointment, you can ask us about participation. There are some requirements you must meet to be able to participate in the study.
If you qualify, we would be more than happy to include you in the studies.
What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome and how is it Treated?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is a disorder that primarily affects the large intestine. Symptoms of IBS vary from person to person but normally include one or more of the following: cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. IBS is a chronic disorder that requires long term treatment and constant check-ups in order to manage it.
A small number of patients will have extremely severe symptoms. Most patients treat IBS with a change in diet, lifestyle, and stress management. Patients with more severe symptoms normally seek medical treatment and advice in order to control the severity of their symptoms.
Again, not every case of IBS is severe. You should see a medical doctor, like Dr.Maher when your symptoms become more serious and persistent. If you begin to experience weight loss, nighttime diarrhea, bleeding, difficulty swallowing or vomiting.
Treatment of IBS again will vary from patient to patient. Trust that Dr.Maher will provide you with the absolute best treatment plan possible for you or your family member. Most of the time treatment includes medication and daily monitoring.
We do not recommend leaving IBS symptoms untreated because they can actually worsen. If you want the best quality of life we recommend getting treatment as soon as you are able to.
If you have any more questions about a treatment plan, contact our office immediately to schedule an appointment. Dr.Maher and his team are more than ready to assist you.
What triggers IBS?
Your diet is the main factor when dealing with symptoms of IBS. This is why the first step in treatment is usually to recommend a change in diet.
Foods high in fiber tend to trigger IBS symptoms and make them worse. But when you know exactly what foods or food group triggers your symptoms, you can make a diet plan to avoid them.
The symptoms you have and the food you need to avoid will vary from person to person. So it is best to find what works for you. We recommend that you increase your daily water intake and eat fewer foods that are high in sugars. Additionally, avoid any foods that may make you gassy like broccoli, onions, and cabbage.
It can be annoying to have to continually modify your diet, but implementing these changes can truly help alleviate your symptoms leading to a more pain-free life.
