An EGD procedure looks inside the upper digestive tract using a tiny camera at the end of a long, flexible tube. This tube is placed inside the patient via the mouth.

GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, which occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the tube connecting your mouth and stomach (your esophagus). This usually occurs at least twice a week. The cause of this is a weakened sphincter, a circular band of muscle around the bottom of your esophagus that relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow into your stomach.
