About Dr. James Maher
Dr. James Maher is a Board Certified Gastroenterologist. He’s had quite the journey to get where he is. He got his bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan. In pursuit of a climate that is a little warmer, he went to The Medical College of Virginia for medical school. The program that he attended was an accelerated program and he graduated.
After his accelerated program he returned to California where he schooled before. In California, he completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-Irvine. The year after that Dr. Maher completed a one-year fellowship, at the University of Southern California, in Hepatology. Followed by another fellowship back at the University of California-Irvine in Gastroenterology.
As a board-certified doctor in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Maher enjoys what he does and why he does it. He enjoys making people feel better the best and knows that everyone’s body should be at peace. He still pursues his medical education because he knows that there is always something more to learn. And also that there are always new developments and improvements in technology.
The doctor truly believes that the patient should be educated about what is going on. doctor patient communication is one of his priorities. He understands that the patient has every right to know and understand what is happening to their body and what will be done to make it better.

The word Gastroenterology might seem a little intimating, but it isn’t. It is a branch of medicine that focuses internally, but more specifically on the digestive system. Any disease that affects your digestive tract is what a gastroenterologist studies.
In order to become a gastroenterologist, one must follow a long process. Eight years of medical school, a year-long internship, three years of an internal medicine residency, and a couple of years of gastroenterology fellowship.
